Amongst all the fabulous exhibitors stalls, there was a
recurrent trend of repurposing waste materials and
recycling them into wonderful new surfaces. It was really great to see this drive of sustainability coming into the commercial market, we believe it is key for us as
designers to help pioneer the future of sustainable design.
We were particularly captured by Surface Matter, Spared and Smile. Each company showcased a unique take on the traditional Terrazzo style by incorporating waste ‘chips’ instead of stone.
Whilst at the show we attended an insightful talk by Anna Starmer – a leading global colour expert and founder of Luminary Colour. Known by many for its world leading forecast publications and colour swatch library. Their aim is to bring thoughtful story telling that activates global design industries to nurture a conscious approach to the future of both colour and materials.
The talk was centred around the deep rooted connections to the origin of colours and long term intentions beyond a singular design trend.
The Surface Design Show 2023 was centred around a regenerative future and a modern market that priorities designs with positive impacts to the environment.
