This week, we ventured to the Business Design Centre in Islington to explore an abundance of innovative surface materials and to attend talks by industry experts. Here’s what we found –

Colour, Material and Finish Forecast: Spring Summer 2021

Our show highlight was a talk by Hannah Malein, Creative director at Colour Hive and Head of Trends for MIX magazine. By studying the current political, economic and social climate, Colour Hive is able to forecast and analyse future trends in design.

These four overarching themes summarise what we can expect to see more of in 2021:
FACTORY – terracotta colours inspired by nostalgia
REVERIE – romantic pearlescent colours inspired by gender politics
CLARITY – transparent pastel colours inspired by sustainability and purity
ALICE – psychedelic colours inspried by escapism and gaming

Surface Materials to Make You Smile

The design team love anything colourful and tactile but the following surface materials really stood out to us!

Terrazzo
One trend that is not going anywhere anytime soon is terrazzo! There were multiple companies showcasing their beautiful terrazzo collections, including Diespeker & Co, Vicalvi and Blue Print Ceramics.
It was love at first sight for the design team when we laid our eyes on the Vicalvi stall, showcasing a wonderland of exquisitely coloured terrazzo. Vicalvi offers a range of premium floor and wall materials that are both innovative and eco-friendly – tugging at our sustainable heartstrings.
Blue Print Ceramics wowed us with their latest terrazzo printed tile collection, allowing us to celebrate the Italian craftmanship at a more affordable price!

Concrete paint
The first stall that we visited but highly memorable. Micro Concrete offer a cement-based coating that can be applied to almost any surface. The coating is easy to apply and comes in a range of colour pigments meaning that the opportunities are endless.

Leaf printing
This year, we got hands on with a leaf printing workshop by Innerspace, aimed to promote their new Woolywall botanical collection.
Innerspace specialise in decorative foliage. Crafted by hand, Innerspace preserve real foliage to achieve the most authentic look with next to no maintenance required – the dream!

We love visiting industry exhibitions to gain as much inspiration as we can to boost our creative juices! If you would like to collaborate with us to create the next best thing in hospitality design, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
